Canyonlands National Park is located in Southern Utah. It’s the biggest national park in Utah, with two grand rivers – the Colorado River and Green River – and three distinct districts to explore.

Let me tell you, our favorite aspect of Canyonlands was its immense beauty and size! Covering a vast expanse of 337,598 acres of land and water, you can revisit it countless times and discover new places each time.

Just a heads up, there are no hotels inside any of Canyonlands National Park District. But no worries, we’ve got all the most convenient places to stay near Canyonlands National Park.

Alright then, let’s kickstart this adventure!

Note: Utah Vacationers has given each property a ⭐ rating based on how we think it measures up. This is not an official ⭐ rating and just something we have provided for extra value to our readers.

We carefully vet every hotel to ensure quality for our readers and generally only recommend hotels with over an 8 point rating on Booking.com so you can’t go wrong with any of these hotels near Canyonlands National Park.

FAQ

What are the best hotels to stay near Canyonlands Island in the Sky District?

Canyonlands National Park’s Island in the Sky District is a breathtaking expanse of mesas, canyons, and cliffs, captivating visitors with its otherworldly landscapes. Perched atop a towering mesa, it offers awe-inspiring panoramic views of deep canyons carved by the Colorado and Green Rivers.

Nature enthusiasts and hikers are drawn to its extensive trail system, leading to iconic landmarks like Mesa Arch and Grand View Point. It also has a lot to offer for thrill seekers like mountain bikers, rock climbers and ATVers.

Moab is the best place to stay for visiting the Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park.  It is a rather remote part of Utah to explore located around 33 miles or 40 minutes drive from Moab but we still think it is the best place to base yourself due to the limited other hotel options.

Here are our favorite choices of hotels in Moab (which you can read more about above):

  • Radcliffe Moab – A pet-friendly boutique hotel in the heart of Moab with high-end amenities;
  • Scenic View Inn & Suites Moab – We have personally stayed here. It is budget-friendly which is great but it is also modern with a great breakfast included.

What are the best hotels to stay near Canyonlands Needles District?

Canyonlands National Park’s Needles District is a mesmerizing tapestry of sandstone spires, arches, and canyons that beckons adventure-seekers and nature lovers alike. Its distinct red and white rock formations create a stunning contrast against the clear blue skies.

Renowned for its extensive trail network, hikers can explore the remote backcountry and discover hidden treasures like Chesler Park and Druid Arch. The Needles District offers a sense of solitude, making it a serene retreat for those in search of tranquility and a deep connection with nature.

Its rich archaeological history, marked by ancient Native American rock art, adds a profound cultural dimension to this captivating landscape.

The Needles district is located further away from Moab, about a 1.5 hour drive (around 75 miles). For this reason, it is an even more remote and untouched area of the National Park which we would highly recommend exploring!

If there is availability (due to limited options) we would recommend Monticello, about a 1 hour drive (50 miles) as the best place to stay in the Needles District. The good news is that accommodation tends to be more affordable here than it is in Moab (due to the crowds that flock to Moab to visit Arches National Park).

Here are our favorite choices of accommodation in and near Monticello (which you can read more about above):

  • Grist Mill Inn – A cheap and cheerful budget option that is absolutely perfect for a no fuss visit to the Needles District;
  • Inn at the Canyons – We really love this budget-friendly 2 star hotel. It has great reviews as well as a big indoor pool and hot tub. Breakfast is also included in the rate.

best places to stay near the needles district

Where to stay near The Maze District of Canyonlands?

The Maze District of Canyonlands NP is very remote so you’ll want a high clearance 4×4 if you want to tackle it.

This remote region boasts an intricate network of narrow canyons, towering cliffs, and winding passages, creating a labyrinthine landscape that tests the limits of exploration.

Accessible only to experienced and well-prepared hikers, the Maze offers a true backcountry experience, rewarding those who brave its challenges with unparalleled solitude and a profound sense of discovery. Its geological marvels, such as the Dollhouse and the Chocolate Drops, leave visitors in awe of nature’s sculpting prowess.

For more information you can see the official National Park website.

As the Maze district is remote, the best places to stay near the Hans Flat Ranger Station in Maze are Green River (2.5 hours away) or Hanksville (80 miles away). Accommodation is limited so we would recommend booking in advance.

  • The Holiday Inn Express – We would recommend The Holiday Inn Express as a great place to stay in Green River for the Maze District. It is the most luxurious hotel in the area with facilities like an indoor pool, great for cooling off in the summer.
  • River Terrace Inn – If you want a more budget friendly option which is clean and comfortable, this is your best bet.

River District of Canyonlands accommodation options?

In the River District of Canyonlands National Park, accommodation options are limited due to its remote and rugged nature. Visitors looking to stay within the park itself can find primitive camping sites along the banks of the Green and Colorado Rivers, offering an immersive experience amidst the breathtaking canyons and riverscapes. You can find more information about this area on the official National Park website.

These campsites provide a unique opportunity to connect with nature and witness stunning sunrises and sunsets over the iconic rock formations. For those seeking more comfortable lodging, nearby towns like Moab may be a better option, offering a range of hotels, motels, and vacation rentals.

What is the area around Canyonlands National Park like?

The surroundings of Canyonlands National Park are a geological wonderland! The landscape is dominated by canyons, shaped over millions of years by the relentless flow of rivers, leaving behind a mesmerizing display of carved rock layers.

In the Needles District, you’ll encounter striking rock spires, while the Maze District showcases vast canyon trenches set against stunning red rock vistas that seem to stretch on endlessly.

The unique rock formations in the park are a result of the easily erodable rock that forms its foundation, particularly noticeable during heavy summer rains. This natural erosion process adds to the park’s breathtaking beauty. The canyons and spires boast a captivating layered appearance, reminiscent of a delicately crafted cake, with softer rock layers delicately resting on harder ones, creating an unreal and awe-inspiring visual spectacle.
